Fifth Dawn is the thirty-second expansion to Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering. This expansion is the third and final set in the Mirrodin block, and is the second expansion to contain 165 cards. The expansion symbol is a helmet, or more specifically, the prerelease card, Helm of Kaldra. The set became legal for sanctioned constructed tournaments on June 20th, 2004. There are two reprints in the set, Circle of Protection: Artifacts, which originated in Antiquities, and Relic Barrier, which originated in Legends. The set's name comes from a piece of the storyline. The world of Mirrodin has four suns: red, blue, white, and black. During the time period of the set, the green sun is revealed and chaos ensues. There are two new keyworded abilities in Fifth Dawn, which are:

Sunburst (This comes into play with a charge counter [or +1/+1 counter if the card is a creature] on it for each color of mana used to pay its cost.)

Scry X (Look at the top X cards of your library. Put any number of them on the bottom of your library and the rest on top in any order.) In Fifth Dawn, the only value printed for X is 2. This mechanic is expected to return in future expansions.

The Sunburst mechanic is a prime example of one of the themes of the set: rewarding those who play with five colors. The more different types of mana you put into a card with Sunburst, the better the card is. Many cards either assist the player in playing four or five colors. Another theme of the set is that of combos. For example, a cycle of cards, named stations, work together to produce infinite combos. Finally, another theme is breaking the rules. A number of cards break never-before-broken rules, and handfuls more defy the expectations of a Magic card. Some examples are:

  • Relentless Rats - You may play more than four copies of this card in your deck.
  • Eon Hub - Players skip their upkeep step.
  • Fist of Suns - You may pay WUBRG instead of a spell's casting cost.
  • Crucible of Worlds - You may play lands from your graveyard as though they were in your hand.
  • Blinkmoth Infusion - Spells should not have obscene casting costs (12UU).

Of course, equipment returns, as do most of the previous mechanics of the block, such as entwine and modular. That which follows is a complete cardlist of the expansion, sorted by color then rarity.
