and its territories (today's Indonesia) become the property of the Batavian Republic (a government of The Netherlands that is a puppet of France).

Under the original electoral system, electors cast two votes, one for president
and one for vice-president. All of the Democratic-Republicans
cast one vote for Jefferson and one for Burr. Burr forgets that he was
put forward as a vice-presidential candidate and does not endorse Jeffferson.
This situation drags on into 1801.

(August 1) The British Parliament passes an Act of Union abolishing
the Irish parliament, making Ireland part of the United Kingdom.

Alexander von Humboldt, sails up the
Orinoco River and discovers that it splits off a branch, known as
the Casiquiare, which eventually drains into the Amazon river.
Humboldt also proposes that Africa and South America had once ben joined.

Parliament passes two Combination Acts that prohibit the formation
of trade unions.

A thousand slaves prepare to attack Richmond with handmade guns
and ammunition, with the idea of establishing an independent Black state.
The uprising's leader, "Gabriel" is betrayed; the rebellion is crushed
and Gabriel is hanged.
