Procopius was a Roman historian, born around 490 A.D. in Caesaria, a city in Palestine. He was a military advisor to the Roman general Belisarius on many campaigns in Persia, Africa, and Italy, and wrote "A History of the Wars of Justinian"; the history of the wars with Persia, the Vandals, and the Goths from 527 - 553.

Another long work of Procopius is a description of public buildings erected during the reign of the Emperor Justinian.

After his death, his work The Secret History was published. It was written as a supplement to his volumes on the wars. The Secret History attacked the emperor, the Empress Theodora, Belisarius, and other high officials of government.
