A
theatrical discipline dating back to the beginning of culture, with roots in the mythologies of most societies.
The actor chooses a
mask and practices with a mirror until the character of the mask begins to dictate physical movement and characterisation, and the actor is 'possessed' by the other face. The masks can be very elaborate - wooden, papier-mache,
porcelain - or simply a photograph of another face.
Half-masks are also often used.
