Burnt Weeny Sandwich is a odd jewel of an album from Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. It ranges from doo-wop presented with only the slightest touch of irony to avant-garde semi-orchestral music.
About three-fourths of the music is of the weirdo, out there, experimental variety. Yet, Zappa demonstrates his talent as a composer by creating adventurous works which are both emotionally evocative and melodic. The album is similar to the wonderful Hot Rats, another instrumental Zappa offering.
An early demonstration of Zappa's great creativity and skill as a composer. His unique approach, emotional range and melodic skill remind me in a strange way (how else!) of Thelonious Monk.
