"Pull me along, push me back, my wings spin round, hear me clack!"
The Buzzy Bee is a child's pull-along toy, made from wood and painted. It has two wobbly spring-like antenna, two wheels at the front, and revolving wings that make a clacking sound as you pull the bee along. It has gained the status of a kiwi cultural icon, and now appears on cutlery, crockery, bags, books, clothing, jewelry, stationery - the list goes on! First made in New Zealand in 1948, there is now some debate as to whether the idea was copied from an early Fisher-Price toy from 1950 called a Queen Bee. The thinking is that someone brought back to New Zealand a prototype bee from a US trade fair. Who knows? Not important anyway...
