"The Clarenceux
King of Arms and Principal
Herald of the South, East and West parts of England" is an officer at the
College of Arms, who is responsible for the
area south of the river Trent. He is one of the two regional heralds of the College, the other being the
Norroy and
Ulster King of Arms who is jointly responsible for those two areas. The name is thought to be derived from the honour of Clare, Suffolk through the
Duke of Clarence.
The southern area of the
United Kingdom is traditionally of a higher average social class, with many northerners assuming everyone from the south is "
posh" and generally well-off. This area contains some highly affluent areas such as
London,
Oxford and
Cambridge.
