Gorbachev is a brand of vodka. Its taste is pretty standard, and its wide-availability coupled with its affordability make it a favorite of college students in central and eastern Europe. Its popularity grew exponentially in the 1980's, its market share skyrocketing. It has remained similarly popular to this day.
Though "Gorbachev" is indeed a russian name, this is in actuality a german vodka.
It is not to be forgotten that Mikhail Gorbachev is a hell of a lot more popular in Germany than he is in Russia. And for those of you who prefer your irony a little less biting: remember Gorby's vigorous anti-alcohol campaign?
