The Northeast section of the state of
Oklahoma is often called Green Country. This area includes the city of
Tulsa and the outlying areas towards the state lines of
Kansas,
Missouri, and
Arkansas. Some of the other cities and towns include
Bartlesville,
Broken Arrow Claremore,
Jenks,
Miami,
Muskogee,
Poteau,
Sallisaw,
Tahlequah, and
Vinita.
Aptly named due to the increased
plant life found in the area. The
rainfall amounts in this section of the state are larger than the rest of the state. The name has been
adopted by both the state and it's residents. Often when mentioning Tulsa or the surrounding areas people will simply say, "Up in Green Country".
Green Country is also home of the
Delaware Tribe of Eastern Oklahoma, the
Cherokee Nation, the
Osage Tribe, and numerous other
tribes.
