The southern part of
Greece, which used to be a
peninsula, but since the digging of the channel through the
Isthmus became an
island.
The meaning of the name is "Pelops' Island".
In antiquity the peninsula contained some of the most important poleis in Greece, such as Sparta, Corinth, Elis, Arcadia and Achaea. The Olympic Games were held here, in a sacred area near Elis.
