Random Number Generator. Used to get (effectively) random numbers from a computer for statistical experiments, digital dice-rolling, etc. It is the only member of the Nethack pantheon that bridges all boundaries of game, class, gender, and race. Those who write to rec.games.roguelike.nethack often worship it and offer sacrifices to it in the hopes of getting that Wand of Wishing on dungeon level 1--but many unfortunates have found that the RNG is a fickle deity, receiving that Wand of Wishing only to meet YASD, against all odds, on level 2.
