Astonishing 1998 album by
Mad Donna.
William Orbit's production and song-writing contributions seem to bring out the best in both of them. Orbit certainly benefits from having a strong voice and songs to work with, rather than his more usual self-indulgent
techno-wibble. Madonna, in return, gets the most exquisite textures and settings for her songs. Several tracks (
Ray of light,
Substitute for love) are clearly inspired by the birth of Madonna's first child around the same time, but (unusually for a pop-star-parent) this does not mean they are complete sentimental mush.
A landmark in both their careers.
