(1977) -
Animated film written and directed by
Ralph Bakshi. Set in a
post-apocalyptic Earth, where
magic has come to reign supreme, twin wizards are born to fulfill a
prophesy.
Avatar is the essence of goodness and light, while his brother
Blackwolf is his polar opposite, embodying all that is dark and evil.
Blackwolf is cast out to the lands of Skortch, still filled with
radiation, where he gathers his armies and searches for ancient relics of forbidden
technology. With those, he hopes to conquer the Faerie realm, and rule the world.
It is up to Avatar and his small band of heroes to defeat Blackwolf and save the world.
An excellent metaphor for World War II (as hinted at by the presence of Nazi propoganda and images), this is one of Bakshi's most unappreciated works. Somewhat adult in nature, it's heavily recommended to anyone who appreciated the original Heavy Metal.
