The
Rodney Dangerfield of
rock music, created by
The Beatles as they grafted elements of (
European and
Indian)
classical,
Tin Pan Alley, and
Dylan to their
rhythm and blues roots. Later artists, from
King Crimson (orchestrations/
free improvisation) to
Brian Eno (
Zen and
shamanism and
world music) to
Sonic Youth (noise), added their own unique graftings to the medium. But surveys show that most
consumers prefer their rock
artless.
