From the French for a small case. In contemporary usage, it refers to a rectangular cartridge to hold spools of linear media such as magnetic tape. When referred to without a qualifier, it refers to a compact cassette. However, it could also refer to various video tape formats such as VHS, BetaMax, or 8mm.
