The direct translation of Fleur de Lis, which is French, is "Flower of the Lily". Fleur de Lis is also the name of a distinct symbol for French royalty. It looks like three flower petals bound together, the ones on the side drooping downward and the middle spiking upwards.

The Fleur de Lis first appeared in the 12th century and was first used by King Louis the VI or VII on his shield. Later, in the 14th century, the symbol was woven into a knight's "coat of arms".
