Normally second meal of the day, taking place around noontime. Lunch is also considered the first meal of the day to people who sleep late, much to the horror of grandparents and other silly people. This meal has also mutated into brunch.

Lunch and luncheon are the same mid-day meal; luncheon is now considered more formal, but "lunch" is likely the original word rather than a shortened version of "luncheon." See the discussion in nuncheon. (This meal is also called dinner in the South, where the evening meal is called supper.)
