A MUCK, or Multi User Creation Kit, is a
computer based, text based
universe. Although it is similar to a
MUD, it differs as it uses more of a object oriented programming language and is solely text based. One of a number of different group related servers, such as
MUSH,
MUX,
MOO,
MUSE, and
MUD and collectively M*'s, MU*'s, or M***'s, "players" log onto the machine via the
Internet and interact with other players. They each control their own character which inhabits the MUCK's world.
Since it is text based, everything is "seen" by your character is described to you. Succinct commands permit you to interact with the people around you and the world. Although this is considered a weakness of MUCKs by some, others consider it a bonus to be able to just imagine the world and depend entirely on their imaginations for images of the virtual world. MUCK worlds can be anything from an undersea world, a droplet populated by microbes, a galactic empire, or an ant hill. Recently MUCKs have become very popular with furries.
