I hear my mother's voice singing:
Mud, mud, glorious mud
nothing quite like it for cooling the blood
so follow me follow
down to the hollow
and there let us wallow
in glorious mud!
My parents had songs for nearly any occasion or place or mood. My mother would sing this when we were going to mess in the garden or dig or go somewhere in ridiculous rain. We hiked and camped when we lived up in upstate New York, and that could get pretty muddy. It was lovely to have a mother who would acknowledge and celebrate getting out in the mud!

There was one time at my grandmother's, when my cousins were there too. We were down at the stream and the group decided to try to change the course. We spent the entire day working on a dam and digging a new stream course. The adults were part of it too. We used rocks and mud and sticks and whatever we could find and learned quite a lot about the force of water. It is not easy to change a stream course!
It was a glorious and muddy day.
