Dr. Dre's first solo
album after the breakup of
N.W.A, released
1992. It was a major milestone in the evolution of
gangsta rap and introduced the world to
Snoop Doggy Dog. It was also a tit in the tit for tat album dissin' wars that the former N.W.A. members had with each other.
Eazy-E receives the brunt of the bad blood.
The Chronic drew upon N.W.A.'s habit of sampling and 'interpolating', especially sampling and interpolating P-Funk, and took it to new extremes. Any person unfamiliar with rap but slightly knowledgeable about 70s era music will recognize they have heard most of the melodies and beats on this album before. Fuck Wit Dre Day, Let Me Ride, and The Roach are P-Funk samples, although 'sample' is an understatement - they are damn rear remakes. There are many others as well. Led Zeppelin's When the Levee Breaks even makes an appearance as the drum loop on Lyrical Gangbang
