Vana is one of the lesser
Vala in
J.R.R. Tolkien's mythology. She is the younger sister of
Yavanna, wife of
Oromë, and her
portfolio is
Youth, in the sense of
rejuvenation, renewal, and
rebirth. She is probably drawn from the
Norse goddess Iduna.
For lack of anything more interesting to speculate about, some theorize that Goldberry and Tom Bombadil were actually Vana and Oromë in disguise. However, I find the parallels are weak. Comparisons of their descriptions between The Silmarillion and The Fellowship of the Ring, as well as their interests, do not bear this out.
