Personal History:
Edith Hamilton was an American author, educator, and classical scholar. She was born in Dresden, Germany, and moved to Farmington, Connecticut, where she was educated at Miss Porter's Finishing School for Young Ladies.
After being introduced to classical studies by her father, Edith went on to earn her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Latin and Greek. This was achieved at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. After becoming a Latin fellow at Bryn Mawr and completing graduate work at the universities of Leipzig and Munich, she was appointed headmistress of the new Bryn Mawr school in Baltimore. She served here until 1922.
In 1957 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and made an honorary citizen of Athens.
