Krishna's incarnation, at the end of Dvapara-yuga, for compiling the
Vedas. Also known as Vyasa, he was the seventeenth purusha
incarnation of the Lord Vishnu, and is described in the Srimad Bhagavatam, thus:
"tatah saptadashe jatah
satyavatyam parasharat
cakre veda-taroh shakha
drishtva pumso 'lpa-medhasah
Thereafter, in the seventeenth incarnation of Godhead, Sri Vyasadeva appeared
in the womb of Satyavati through Parashara Muni, and he divided the one
Veda into several branches and sub-branches, seeing that the people in
general where less intelligent."

"kalena milita-dhiyam avamrishya nrinam
stokayusham sva-nigamo bata dura-parah
avirhitas tv anuyugam sa his satyavatyam
veda-drumam vita-pasho vibhajishyati sma
The Lord Himself in His incarnation as the son of Satyavati [Vyasadeva]
will consider his compilation of the Vedic literature to be very difficult for the
less intelligent persons with short life, thus He will divide the tree of Vedic
knowledge into different branches, according to the circumstance of the
particular age."
