metallurgy lead to methods of producing steel. When a
coal derivative called
coke is blown through molten iron, the composition and properties of the metal change. Stronger, less brittle, and more resistant to
corrosion than the iron from which it is made, steel was long the
material of choice for warships,
planes, and many other
vehicles.
