The story of the Lampton worm originates from the place that is now
Washington (on the
River Wear), but was previously a smattering of villages - one of which was known as
Lampton, as is a district of Washington today (albeit as the slightly bastardized
Lambton)
The hill that the worm apparently wrapped itself around can also be found in Washington, known as (unsurprisingly)
worm hill, in the
Fatfield region of Washington. The peak of the hill has a small monument recounting the tale of the worm.
I used to attend
Lambton Primary school as a lad and we were forced to the sing the above song as part of morning assembly. Those were the days...
