In the sixteenth century, Dr.
John Dee,
astrologer to Queen
Elizabeth I, mentioned the existence of a
zodiac in or around
Glastonbury. What he meant by this is too vague and without any evidence of existence--what kind of images, whether they corresponded to the traditional
Greco-Roman Zodiac--is unknown. However, in 1929,
Katherine Maltwood, an illustrator, thought that the images could be dicerned from
aerial photographs, outlined in roads, earthworks, rivers, and other natural and man-made formations. The earthenworks date to 27,000 BC. Maltwood held that the zodiac was the original meaning of the
Grail quest, as laid out in her book
Glastonbury Temple of the Stars.
At the center lies Butleigh, Somerset, and Glastonbury Tor and Chalice Hill (Aquarius) is north-northwest of the ten mile circle. Wearyall Hill is identified with Pisces.
According to this plan, each of Arthur's knights can be equated with a constellation. For instance, Gawain would be Aries, Perceval would be Pisces, and so on. I'm not saying I believe this, though. I just find it interesting.
