They occured in
1692 and started in a what is now the town of
Danvers, then known as
Salem Village. Two young girls were accused of being
witches,
Betty Parris and
Abigail Williams. The daughter and niece of the village minister
Reverend Samuel Parris. It all started because of their
strange behavior.
By the end of it 24 people had died. 19 were hanged on Gallows Hill in Salem Town. The rest died in prison or torture.
There has been much written about these events.
