A parlour goose is a
bagpipe that has a
practice chanter instead of a
pipe chanter the purpose of the parlour goose is to allow the pupil to learn to keep consistent pressure on the bag without having to exert enough pressure to sound a pipe
chanter reed(a pipe chanter reed is considerably stronger than a practice chanter reed).
Often a goose is played first with no
drones, then with one drone at a time until finally all three drones are in place.
With practice on a goose the student will eventually be able to produce an unwavering tone.
