The
Aiken Bible was the first complete
Bible printed in
English in the independent
United States. It has special significance to those who believe that
America is destined to the land of the
christian free rather than just the
land of the free.
The Library of Congress has several copies and some recent Librarians of Congress (namely L. Quincy Mumford and James H. Billington) have sworn their oath of office on one of them.
